How to Win Friends and Influence People

Six Ways to Make People Like You...

Rule 1: Become genuinely interested in other people.
1)"Do this and you will be welcomed anywhere."
2)"You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you."
3)"Ask questions to other people, questions that they would enjoy answering."

I agree with Dale Carnegie on this rule. The way to get close to people and influence people is by not talking so much about yourself to others. People naturally like talking about themselves but if only they stopped and thought about getting to know someone and asking questions. You learn a lot about a person by asking and getting to know them. They key would be not just asking random questions but asking questions that include their opinion or details or views about something or someone. I think this a great way to make people like you because it shows that you're genuinely interested in what they have to say. It says that you don't just talk about yourself all the time. And that you're willing to hear what other people have to say about themselves. It isn't always about talking about yourself and bragging about things or whatnot but actually being interested in a person and what they think and feel.
"Be genuinely interested in everyone you meet and everyone you meet will be genuinely interested in you."- Rasheed Ogunlaru

The way that I will apply this to my life is by asking more questions to people and not talk about myself, start with asking questions about them.

Rule 2: Smile
1) "Actions speak louder than words, and a smile says, "I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you."
2) "You don't feel like smiling? Then force yourself to smile."
3) "It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign (witness or indication) of friends."

I think this is a great tip from Dale Carnegie on how to win friends and influence people. If you smile it lets people know that not only you're happy but that you're open for conversation. And then people will want to talk to you. By smiling it won't show or give that impression that you're angry at the world or that you're mad. A smile can give off positiveness and give off positive feelings. Like carnegie says if you don't feel like smiling, then force yourself to smile. If you're having a bad day, you should force yourself to smile because it really does make you feel better. You can trick your brain into thinking that you're happy, and your mood will change. So you should force yourself to smile even if you don't feel like it. Wherever you are, whether it's in your home, or work it is always great to smile. It will bring more positive things in your life.
"I think that anybody that smiles automatically looks better." - Diane Lane

The way that I will apply this to my life is by smiling more, and smiling more when I don't want to or feel a certain way. Smiling more in general because I feel like I don't do that enough.

Rule 3: Remember Names

1) "A man's name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language."
2) "If you don't remember names, you are headed for trouble."

One good way to make friends and influence people is by remembering names. It is crucial when meeting someone important or just anyone. If you don't remember names then it just says that you weren't listening. People like hearing their name being heard, according to Carnegie, so don't put yourself in a position where you forget someone's name.

Rule 4: Be a good listener. Encourage other to talk about themselves.

1) "If you aspire to be a good conversationalist, be an attentive listener."
2) "Remember that the man you are talking to is a hundred times more interested in himself and his wants and his problems that he is in you and your problems."

When speaking with a person you aren't going to be having a conversation and not listen to them. They'll only dislike you because you don't pay attention. I think this is a good tip from Dale Carnegie to win friends and influence people, because nobody wants to be ignored when talking. The more you listen and are attentive the more that they'll want to talk to you. So when having a conversation with somebody, always listen to what they have to say. Also one thing that people love to do, is talk about themselves. Any opportunity they get, they'll start talking about themselves.  So when meeting someone new, always ask about them. Don't just talk about yourself and/or brag. Maybe you'll learn something new, if you ask and also be attentive to what they have to say. So always ask about others, what they like to do, etc. You'll win a friend and you'll be able to influence people. So follow Dale's advice and do it, because it'll result in a positive outcome.
"Most of the successful people I've known are the ones who do more listening than talking." - Bernard M. Baruch

The way that I will apply this to my life, is by listening more attentively and not getting distracted by what someone is saying. Also, by asking more about people and not just focusing on myself.

Rule 5: Talk in terms of the other man's interest.
"The royal road to a man's heart is to talk to him about the things he treasures most."

Dale Carnegie suggests that you talk about what the other person's interest are. Instead of meeting a person and going directly into talking about you or anything else, it's best to talk and ask about their interests. They'll know that you're interested in knowing about them and they'll want to talk to you and get to know you. I think that Dale carnegie's advice for this is good. I think people want to get to know you if you seem interested in them. So always talk about what other people's interest are, it might actually fascinate you and you might learn something.

"I'm still passionately interested in what my fellow humans are up to. For me, a day spent monitoring the passing parade is a day well spent." - Garry Trudeau

The way that I will apply this to my life is by being interested in what other people want to do.

Rule: Make the other person feel important-- and do it sincerely.
"The desire to be important is the deepest urge in human nature."(John Dewey) "Helping people feel important and appreciated works magic."

One thing you can do to win friends and influence people is by making them feel important and doing it sincerely. Dale Carnegie says that the desire to be important is the deepest urge in human nature. I think it is true because everyone wants to feel important and that they are important and being appreciated. I think that whenever you meet someone always make them feel important and that whatever they have to say or think matters. I think that it will make them trust you and like you. Helping people feel important and appreciated will win you friends and help you influence them too. It makes you seem like a very caring person who doesn't just care about themselves. This makes people want to talk to you because it seems like you really do care. And you should, you shouldn't fake caring about what they tell you, it has to be sincere because that's wrong. So always be sincere about what you say and make people feel important and appreciated.

"Every single person is sacred. Sacred means special, precious, a treasure of true beauty. That means you."- Amy Leigh Mercree

According to New York Times, this year voters will decide between two ballot measures; Proposition 62, which would end the death penalty and replace with life sentence, or Proposition 66, which would speed up the executions. There has been many stories about people being murdered, the murderer being put in prison, on death row, but they stay there for many decades. They end up either dying of natural causes, or committing suicide. I believe that California should get rid of the death penalty once and for all. By keeping those criminals on death row costs a lot of money, just so that they can end up having more life time and dying of natural cause. I think that they should ban the death penalty and just give them life sentences. I don't believe that for those people who murder, death scares them. It doesn't. I bet that they are fine with the death penalty, it doesn't phase them. If they were given life sentence, I feel like that would be a bigger punishment, because at least now, they'll have to sit in a cell till the day they die. They get to be reminded of what they have done. Even if they have no remorse, it will come back to haunt them. I don't believe anything would change if people voted for the death penalty to get sped up. There is many of them on death row, and the process takes a very long time. I think that it's a waste of time and money keeping them there. The better punishment would be letting them stay there for life.

My current thoughts and feelings are I am not feeling very enthusiastic and I don't know why. I have been coughing for the past three weeks and i am not even sick anymore. It is annoying. It is barely Monday and Monday is always dreaded. One thing that I can't wait for is Halloween. My favorite holiday of the year. Scary movies on t.v all day, the weather, and warm drinks like coffee. It is the best. I recently went to Fright Fest at Six Flags and it was awesome although it is pretty scary. For some reason I really love horror. It is funny to me when people say they hate those kinds of things, but it's amazing what makeup and props can do. You just have to remind yourself that it isn't real. Hopefully this year can be a good Halloween since last year wasn't the best. It's shocking to think that the year is almost over when i feel like we just started it last month. It's always a bittersweet feeling when a new year is approaching. It reminds me that we are growing, getting older, and that is a pretty scary thing to me. The whole idea of the future is scary. You just never know what's going to happen. I try to not think about it much but it's hard not to. I guess that we just have to go with whatever life throws to us and deal with it.

We recently finished the 6 ways to be happier person in life, and they've all been really helpful. The ones that have stood out to me have been the "Be positive" one and "Be grateful". The mind is the most powerful organ in our body. It sends signals so our body can move and let us know what we need. Aside from helping us physically, it helps us be psychologically stable. A positive mind equals to a happy person. I've been trying to keep that in mind lately. You're mind which is basically yourself can tell you negative or positive things. But only you can control that. It is like a little devil and angel on your shoulder. It is you to decide which one to listen to and to keep. It can get hard at times, but if you train yourself to just think positive thoughts, than it gets used to it. Being positive does really make you a happier person because if you're a pessimistic negative person, then you always expect the worst and think low of yourself. Going over this way really reminded me that it is important to be positive, not only does it keep you happy, but it also attracts good things. It also made me realize that I should be practicing to be positive everyday, and whenever negative thoughts come to mind to change them with positive thoughts.

Senior year has me stressed out. There is so many things due and so many deadlines that it has me stressed out. I just want to graduate already and just get out of high school once and for all. There is only 7 more months, so that's good. Time is going by really quick and before I know it, we might already be out of high school. I wonder if I'll miss it, I probably will because of all the responsibilities that getting out of high school brings.

The thing that i have done since learning to be more proactive is get a job. I think that adds to being proactive. It gives me the opportunity to save up money for the future and for what i want. I will keep the end in mind and accept the fact that sometimes i will want to quit but knowing the end goal will help me stay focused.

"The Six Attitudes of High Achievers"

High Achievers....

1. Make no small plans
High achievers make no small plans. High achievers never settle for the least, they want to aim for the best and be the best that they can be. The sky is the limit, and you can be anything you want. That's why they make big plans, not small plans, because you want to challenge yourself and your capabilities. I think it is good that we do this because it can teach us many things about ourselves. You can set really big goals, even if other people think that they are being unrealistic. If you set your mind to it, you can achieve it. Everyone is capable of being someone in life, if they make big plans for change. For growth and for success. That's why people make no small plans, because they want to see where they can end up with their big plans.

"Make no small plans, they have no magic to stir men's blood."- Daniel Burnham

2. Do what they fear
People who are high achievers always go and do for what they fear. Everyone has to face their fears someday. Even though you can be really scared to face them, it helps in the long run. It can also help you overcome your fear. Once you face them and overcome them you'll tell yourself why you were scared in the first place. If you never do what you fear, you will never grow. And if you never grow you won't be able to achieve what you want to achieve. If you don't do what you fear the most, you'll will have a lot of questions and they'll go unanswered because you were too scared. Great things can come out of doing something that you fear. That's why they are called fears for a reason, it isn't easy but it isn't impossible either. It is something that you need to overcome and face. Whether it's being scared of public speaking, of water, etc. Everyone is capable of overcoming their fears, in result of feeling good about themselves and the fact that they faced them. Doing what you fear can teach you a lot of things about yourself also, so I think if you're too scared to do something just go for it because it may result in something wonderful.

"Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears." -Les Brown

3. Are willing to prepare

High achievers are always willing to prepare for what's to come. They don't wait till last minute to get things done. This is good because the day of whatever it is, they don't have to be rushing to get things done. When the day comes they are prepared ready to go. This way they do the best that they can do. You have to be willing to prepare to get the best results. Even though preparing can be hard, it's beneficial and will help you in the long run. You have to be willing to put in your time and effort in it in order to get the best results. Whenever you have a test or something important, it is best to not wait last minute to study or practice, it will only affect you. You always have to think what's best for you. And just do it. You can't just wait, remind yourself what has to be done, and make sure it gets done.

"Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation."- Robert H. Schuller

4. Are willing to risk failure
High achievers are willing to risk failure. They know that in order to succeed you have to fail. Understanding that in order to succeed you have to fail is very important for high achievers to understand. It is not always about winning. With failure come great lessons that you can take a lot from. High achievers aren't always looking to win. They'll risk failing in order to get the best results. By risking failing, it shows a lot about your character because you're not playing it safe. You're actually taking a risk and perhaps everything can turn out good. You should always be willing to risk failure because no matter how dumb and idea might sound or what other people think, great things can come out of risking failure and not playing it safe. And even if they risk failure and they do fail, you get back up from it and learn from it and move on. They don't let it define them or what they are capable of. That's the way it should happen. So high achievers are willing to risk failure for the best results.

"Be wise enough not to be reckless, but brave enough to take great risks."- Frank Warren

5. Are teachable
High achievers are teachable meaning that they are willing to learn and listen when they are being taught. When they are being taught a lesson they are not like most kids that do not listen to what they are being told. They pay attention because they know that it's the right thing to do. They are teachable meaning that you can count on them to listen and learn the material or whatever is being taught. Usually kids don't listen and are always getting distracted, those kids are unteachable. They always end up getting distracted while being taught so they never learn anything. You should always pay attention and listen because then you gain knowledge. High achievers want to do that because they want to learn new things. It helps you get closer to where you want to be at. They are open minded and are willing to anyone's ideas and beliefs although they may disagree, they still learned something new about someone else. So you should always be willing to learn something new. Be teachable, you may learn something valuable.
"The unteachable man is sentenced to being taught only by experience. The tragedy is he reaches nothing further than his own pain."- Criss Jami

6. Have heart
High achievers have heart meaning that they have empathy and compassion. They have the ability to feel for others and/or help them. There is people out there that usually don't care about anything or anyone if it isn't themselves. They have no compassion for others. They don't about what others are going through because if it isn't happening to them then it doesn't matter. High achievers have heart because they are able to feel compassion over the problems someone may be going through. They feel the need to help in any way that they can. If their help can be of any use then they are happy. I think that everyone should have heart because it's nice to help someone out, you can make someone's day or really provide a solution to a problem that they are having. You can't be full of hate and expect a happy life. You must be nice and have heart and be compassionate towards things and others.
"Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead."- Oscar Wilde

Reflection

I think that the 6 attitudes are great to make you a better person with better values in life. They teach you something new that you didn't really know before or didn't practice before. What I commit to do about the 6 attitudes to make myself a better person and become a high achiever is doing and facing what I fear. Just going for it and not being scared that things might not turn out the way that I want them to. Also I'll be willing to risk failure. Not being scared of failing and that things might go wrong. Understanding that to grow, it's okay to make mistakes. Also i'll be willing to prepare for whatever it is that I have to do. Getting prepared raises the chance for the results to be better. I believe that by following these, I will become a much better person and a high achiever. These are the elements in being a better person in life in general so I will follow these 6 elements.
